Susan Howton, a native of Harrisburg, IL is a recent hire as Home Study/Post Adoption Worker for Madison Adoption Associates. A retired school social worker, Susan has many years of experience working with families, school students, Headstart, and teachers and support staff. Experience as an intern with DCFS and as an aide with Lutheran Social Services exposed her to adoptive and post adoptive situations, although the international aspect is fairly new to her. Susan will be working in the southern Illinois area as cases are assigned.
Retail experience for 15 years gave Susan a unique perspective with the public, as well. The “Kmart” years, both as a clerk and assistant manager served to acquaint her with family dynamics of employees and customers and broadened her people skills. Returning to college at age 50, Susan commuted for four years to earn her BSW and MSW at SIU-Carbondale, and enjoyed every minute of that journey.
After graduation in 2000, she was employed by Wabash Ohio Valley Special Education District for the next 15 years, retiring in 2015. Susan anticipates new education and opportunities with Madison in the months and years to come.
The mother of three adult children and grandmother of 6 grandchildren, Susan is enjoying her new role as great grandmother to a darling little baby boy born in Oct. 2021. Until cases are assigned to Susan, she keeps busy with activities at church, a delivery job with a local food truck, and thrift shop exploring with friends.
