Special Needs – Microphthalmia

Special Needs Guide

Microphthalmia: Microphthalmia is an eye abnormality where one or both eyeballs are abnormally small. In some children, the eye may appear to be completely missing; however, even in these cases some remaining eye tissue is generally present. Severe cases are sometimes labeled as anophthalmia, which means no eyeball has formed at all. These terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Microphthalmia may or may not result in significant vision loss.
